Giveaway Winners!

Sorry this post is a little late but I took the very time consuming route of writing out everyone's name and putting them in a hat to pick winners. Not so bad for the Chantecaille giveaway, but it took ages for the 120 followers one!

Thanks to everyone who entered and for telling me your favourite makeup brands. It seems I definitely need more Urban Decay in my life, as well as a trip to Superdrug to take a closer look at Sleek. If I had to choose myself, I think my favourite brand would be Le Metier de Beaute, but that is a recent development. For the sheer length of time I've been purchasing and the number of products I have from each, it would have to be Chanel and Nars. I adore Francois Nars' eye for colour and his Velvet Matte Lip Pencils, and I am a devotee of Chanel bases and blushers.

Now for the winners.

The winner of the Rouge Terrybly By Terry Lipstick in the shade of your choice was open to the first 120 people who were followers of my blog, entry was automatic. The name that came out of the hat was Leanne OCD! So my fellow True Blood fanatic, drop me an email with your address and the colour you'd like, you can see the full colour range on Space Nk's website.

The winner of the Chantecaille Palette Giveaway was open to everyone, all you had to do was leave a comment stating your favourite makeup brand. The winner is dempss01! Email me your address and which palette you would like out of the Turtles and the Tigers and I'll do my best to get it for you from either Space NK in the UK or Nordstrom in the US.

Congratulations to Leanne OCD and dempss01, I hope you both enjoy the prizes xxx

Nars Summer 2011 Collection - Review & Swatches

I have failed on two counts, firstly the amount of law revision I've done is pitiful, but secondly, my spending ban lasted all of 3 days. I kid you not. In my defence, it was due to circumstances beyond my control. I had a bad medical diagnosis (yes, another one) and when I'm stressed/depressed/upset/annoyed, take your pick, I buy makeup, in a big way. At least my perilous bank balance is your gain!
Chanel Collections are what I usually hold out for but this Spring I was hotly anticipating the Nars Summer collection. I normally end up getting at least one item from every seasonal collection from Nars, but I never feel the need to rush out and buy. However, my love affair with pink, matte lipsticks and eyeshadows that bring to mind St Tropez in the 1960s meant that I had my finger on the add to basket button the moment Nars Summer 2011 was launched. Sadly, it has taken over two weeks for my products to arrive, but these are my initial impressions.

Nars Eyeshadow Trio in Cap Ferrat and Nars Matte Lipstick in Carthage
I'll start with the lipstick as this was a little bit of a disappointment. I have all of the Nars Velvet Matte Pencils and four of the new(ish) matte lipsticks, so I was thrilled to see a bright pink added to the line, something that has definitely been lacking. This pink is not as bright as I thought it would be though, and is a touch warmer than I expected. I am being very picky, because I love pink lipstick, but I prefer the classic Nars Schiap for a vivid, shocking pink. This one falls a little flat. If you are a regular reader then you'll know I just found my holy grail pink lipstick so this may have clouded my view.

It is a 'nice' colour and the matte texture isn't too difficult to pull off, but I don't think it is a must have. I love bright pinks and corals with a tan and this will probably suit all skintones, but if you already have a number of bright shades, you could skip this easily, especially when Revlon do some fantastic bright matte shades for less than half the price.

Nars Matte Lipstick in Carthage applied
Now onto the star of the collection in my eyes, the eyeshadow trio in Cap Ferrat. Although the previous limited edition trios have looked beautiful, they had a lot of bad reviews, especially over quality and the fact you get more of some colours than others. Thankfully, Francois Nars must have been listening as these issues have been resolved. The trio has been redesigned so you get an equal amount of all three shadows and each one is perfectly smooth in texture.

The three shades are a light sea foam green/turquoise, a brighter turquoise and a vivid sea blue. It would be easy to feel a little afraid of these colours in the pan but they are not as pigmented when applied, instead they give a sheerer was of colour, especially the lightest shade.

When the trio arrived this afternoon I had to laugh as I pulled out my MAC Pro Palette to find the first three MAC shades I ever bought, almost exact replicas of those in the new trio. I guess my tastes haven't changed much in 6 years! The Nars eyeshadows are different though in that they give a more subtle effect. My favorite has to be the lightest sea foam green/turquoise which gives a light wash of colour, working well with a vivid lip (pink, coral or orange). All three shades are very shimmery and this could be a bit too much for some people, but paired with just bronzer or a matte blush, I think they work.

Swatches of Nars Cap Ferrat and Nars Matte Lipstick in Carthage
I thought it might be useful to compare the Nars shades to the MAC ones I own, as although not identical, they give you an idea of what the two brands offer.

Swatches left to right: MAC Mega Metals in Dalliance, MAC eyeshadow in Aquadisiac , MAC eyeshadow in Parrot
Finally, here is a quick look of all the shades used together. It's not meant to be an artistic masterpiece ( I leave that to the likes of Kenneth Soh!), just give an impression of how the colours work on my fair skin. I added a bit of Poppy King for No.7 lip gloss over the matte lipstick and only used a cream bronzer on the cheeks. Personally, I would have left the eyes with a sheer wash of the lightest turquoise, but I added the darker turquoise to the outer half of the upper lid and then used the blue wet underneath the lower lashes, attempting to blend it up to the upper outer corner. I hope that makes a bit of sense!

NOTD - Butter London Artful Dodger

As summer is well and truly here (we've had a week's sunshine here in Kent so far), I felt the need to go for something a little more unusual for my nails, basically not pink or coral. I ended up with Artful Dodger by Butter London, a creme that is halfway between sky blue and turquoise, but a little murkier than I expected. Having said I thought this was an unusal shade for me, I felt a little embarassed when I looked through my stash to reveal I owned about 10 similar colours!
3 coats of Butter London Artful Dodger applied + top coat
Although I only tried Butter London polishes for the first time around Christmas, I have always found the quality to be excellent and I love the colour selection. With Artful Dodger though, I had a lot of problems. On the first coat the varnish didn't seem to want to apply to my OPI Nail Envy base coat at all so it looked very patchy. The second coat was thick and hard to work with and I needed a third to get any kind of uniformity. It took much longer than I like to spend doing my nails and 90 minutes later, when I thought they should have been fully dry, I was using some kitchen roll and ended up with smudges and dents. Needless to say I took the polish off soon after I took the photos and resorted to Chanel Jade, which I can report is smudge and chip free after 5 days wear.

Lef tto right: Nail Inc Eden Grove, Nails Inc Berkley Street, Nails Inc Haymarket, Chanel Nouvelle Vague, Butter London Artful Dodger, OPI What's with the cattitude?, OPI Suzy says feng shui, Leighton Denny Notorious
I do like the colour of Artful Dodger and I don't know whether I just got a bad bottle, but when I have so many similar shades in brands I trust, I can't recommend it. There are still a lot of Butter London Nail Polishes that I have my eye on but I am a little concerned that they may resemble Artful Dodger in formula. I feel I might be safer spending my money on Illamasqua or OPI.

Butter London Artful Dodger is £12 from

FOTD featuring Le Metier de Beaute Kaleidoscope Eye Kit in Devotion

When I posted a full face picture previously, showing the Rouge Terrybly Cherry Cherry lipstick, I had a few people ask what other makeup I was wearing. Usually I tend to shy away from these type of posts because I don't particularly like seeing my face in photos and I don't want to seem like I am pretending to be a makeup artist, as I'm not. However, if it helps people to see the products I feature and review better then I am happy to do so. Here goes.

  • Laura Mercier Oil Free Primer
  • Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua in B10
  • By Terry Touche Veloutee (lightest shade)
  • Le Metier de Beaute Echo Blush
  • Top shade from Le Metier de Beaute Kaleidoscope Eye Kit in Devotion (Spring 2010)
  • Le Metier de Beaute Black Liquid Liner Pen
  • Chanel Imitable Mascara in Purple
  • Le metier de Beaute Eyebrow Pencil in Natural Blonde
  • By Terry Rouge Terrybly in Cherry Cherry
This wasn't really meant to be a proper look (if it was I wouldn't have used products that are no longer available!), it was all focused on the lips. I also tend to avoid concealer most of the time although I need it, as I find I can't get it to not look really cakey and I'd prefer to have spots on show than to go out with really heavy, horrid looking concealer. I am haunted by an episode at school when one of the boys told a friend she had crayon on her face. She asked me in front of him if she did, and it was actually really bad stick concealer that was both a poor match to her skin tone and not blended. It was a very awkward moment while I considered what to say!

A lot of the products are used are from Le Metier de Beaute, and this is because it is probably my favourite makeup brand in the world. I am very upset that it has left the UK and really hope it will come back soon, but in the meantime I have a lovely friend who is enabling me to still get my Le Metier fix. You can purchase their blush in Echo, one of their bestsellers, on its own but I got it in the Kaleidoscope Face Kit (post to come).

Le Metier de Beaute Kaleidoscope Eye Kit in Devotion - £65
The Devotion Eye Kit was released in Spring 2010 and although I'd never heard of the brand back then, I found one on eBay about a month ago and was beyond thrilled! I'm not sure if you can buy the eyeshadow colours individually or if they were all limited edition but here is a closer look at the kit itself.

As with all kaleidoscopes it consists of four full size shades, designed to be layered either top to bottom or bottom to top. As the pink lip was fairly strong, I just used the top colour, a gold/bronze, all over the lid. Although the other shades look a little intimidating in the pan, when used on the eye they work seamlessly together. This kit works really well to bring out my green eye colour.

Top Shade (the one I used)

Second shade - a rusty burgundy which looks metallic

Thrid shade - a vivid orange copper which looks metallic

Bottom shade - Deep navy with a subtle shimmer
Here are some swatches but ideally, all four colours should be layered on top of one another to create an effortless effect that makes the eyes pop. This is apparently more youthful as the traditional smokey eye can sometimes be ageing rather than flattering according to the Le Metier makeup artists.

On my fingers is just one swipe of the pan, so you can get an idea how pigmented these eyeshadows are.

Swatches left to right: Top to bottom in the compact
Le Metier eyeshadows are very high quality and I would recommend them to anyone. I find the kaleidoscope kits a great way of buying them because it encourages me to try shades I would ordinarily have passed by.

If you are in the US then Niemans have a special limited edition Kaleidoscope made up of three permanent eyeshadows in similar colours to those in the Devotion palette (gold/bronze/brown) along with a setting powder. For everyone else, Nordstrom stocks Le Metier and will ship worldwide, but at a huge cost.

I am on a mission to try to collect every Le Metier Kaleidoscope Kit I can and can't wait to see what they have in store for Summer 2011.

If luxury eyeshadows are you thing then be sure to enter my latest Chantecaille giveaway, there are just 6 days to go! For for information click here. Good luck!

My Holy Grail Pink Lipstick

I mentioned this a while ago and did reveal it in my giveaway post but here is a more in depth review of By Terry Rouge Terrybly Lipstick in Cherry Cherry. For me, pink lipsticks do not get better than this.

Rouge Terrybly Cherry Cherry Lipstick - £30.50

I have only used a few products from By Terry and one of those, Baume de Rose, I absolutely hate (too greasy and not at all moisturising). Therefore, I'm not at all familiar with the brand and so when the new By Terrybly premium products (more expensive) were launched, I wasn't especially interested. I'd never tried an ordinary By Terry lipstick before so I couldn't envision me paying enough more for one a By Terrybly one.

As usual though, I started to see other bloggers' swatches and they began to appear more appealing. When I was in London last month, I managed to quickly sneak in to Space NK and see the lipsticks for themselves and I fell for them in a big way. I thought that with Tom Ford's Pure Pink, that was all I needed but once a beauty addict always a beauty addict, so I used some indulge points to get the shade Cherry Cherry.

The official take on the Rouge Terrybly lipsticks is:

'A volumising and firming lipstick enriched with the By Terry exclusive anti-ageing Lumilip Technology to rejuvenate and embellish lips. An extra-comforting and plumping lip elixir which combines rich colours and active ingredients with an anti-ageing formula that works to prevent thining of the lips. Filled with ultra pure high colour pigments, the texture offers complete and extra-smoothing colour. Extra-fine and silky-smoothing, it glides onto the lips and reshapes the contours without heaviness, plumping them without drying. Delicately perfumed and filled with active ingredients, it pampers the lips and repairs them in depth.'

Swatches left to right: By Terrybly Cherry Cherry, Tom Ford Pure Pink
I would describe Cherry Cherry as a cool toned bright pink, with a touch more blue in it that Tom Ford's Pure Pink and a little less of a shimmery effect when worn. As I have a cooler skin, I find Cherry Cherry more flattering but what really makes it special is the shade combined with an ultra light formula. It glides on so easily, without being too creamy so that it smears, and once on I can completely forget that it is there.

Although the price is high, at £30.50, I don't mind paying that for the perfect shade or the perfect texture. My lips are incredibly dry and irritated so I find many cheaper lipsticks tend to exaggerate this. I tend to be overjoyed when I find a lipstick I can wear without needing copious amounts of lip balm!

Left to right: Rouge Terrybly Cherry Cherry, Tom Ford Lipstick in Pure Pink
Finally, here is how it looks on the lips.

And in the context of my whole face

By Terry Rouge Terrybly Lipstick in Cherry Cherry applied
So there you have it, my holy grail pink lipstick. I would love to be able to say that now I've found it the quest will end, but I think you all know me better than that. I have no idea what the other lipsticks are like in the By Terry range and how they compare to Rouge Terrybly, but one thing I am certain of is that this won't be my last Rouge Terrybly lipstick.

For swatches of some of the other shades, check out London Makeup Girl's post here and Replica's post here.

Have any of you found your Holy Grail lip products yet? Let me know if I am missing out on something!

By Terry's Rouge Terrybly Lipsticks are available form Space NK for £30.50 each.

If you were one of my first 120 followers, then you are automatically entered into a giveaway to win the shade of your choice. If not, never fear, as you can still enter my second giveaway, to win a Chantecaille palette. Just follow the instructions on my original post here. Good luck!

Monday Manicure: Leighton Denny I Love Juicy

As the weather has been glorious this weekend I thought I would dig out one of my favourite summer colours for my nails, I love Juicy by Leighton Denny. It is a vibrant coral red creme, perfect for fingers or toes.

2 coats of Leighton Denny I Love Juicy applied + top coat
I do like a lot of the shades in Leighton Denny's range but I do find them a little thick for my liking. After one coat, this colour didn't look quite right but two gave the perfect opaque finish I am used to. I also find the wear of Leighton's products to be excellent.

To give a better idea of the colour, I pictured I Love Juicy next to the orange Juicy Cool. I put the latter on my toes and I absolutely hate it, but it helps to show the bright coral tones of I Love Juicy. My mother called I Love Juicy orange, which shows how different our individual ideas and perception of colours are, so the final picture is of I Love Juicy on the nails, holding a bottle of Juicy Cool (what I consider to be a true orange).

Leighton Denny products are available from QVC and as well as a range of other retailers.

Chantecaille Giveaway!

As promised, I have finally got around to sorting this giveaway. Originally it was to celebrate reaching 100 followers, as I'm now on 120 you can see how long it has taken me! There are two different giveaways with different prizes, the first is only for current followers to thank them for supporting my blog in its early stages, but the second (for the Chantecaille palette) is open to everyone.

Chantecaille Sea Turtles Palette - £73 from Space NK

1. The first giveaway is only open to those 120 people currently following my blog. You don't have to do anything at all, you are all already entered. This is to thank you all for your support. The prize is a By Terry Rouge Terrybly Lipstick in the colour of your choice (you can see the colours available on and there are great swatches on and

I tried one of these in March, the shade Cherry Cherry, and it is now my holy grail pink lipstick (there will be a post on it soon). It is an amazing colour and feels so lightweight on so I thought it would make a great prize. The winner will be announced in 2 weeks time, on Sunday 24th April. I will contact the winner and ask for your preferred shade and then order it from Space NK. Please note this is only open to current followers and all 120 of you are automatically entered. Good luck!

By Terry Rouge Terrybly Lipstick in Cherry Cherry - £30.50 from Space NK
2. The second giveaway is open to everyone, new and old followers alike, and the prize is your choice of either the Chantecaille Sea Turtles Palette or the Tiger in the Wild Palette. Each features 3 eye colours (one can be used as a liner) and a cheek colour. To be in with a chance of winning you must be a follower of this blog with GFC and leave a comment stating which palette you would prefer and telling me your favourite makeup brand(s). It is that simple.

Now onto the rules:
  • The giveaway closes at 11pm on Saturday 23rd April 2011 and the winner will be announced on Sunday 24th April. Any entries after this time won't be counted.
  • The winner will be picked by a random number generator.
  • To enter you must be a follower of my blog and leave a comment on this post stating your palette preference and your favourite makeup brand.
  • There is only one entry per person, I will be checking so please don't try to enter more than once.
  • Please bear in mind that if you state a preference for the Tiger in the Wild palette, I have to order it from America and this could take a couple of weeks to arrive.
  • This giveaway is open to everyone, both UK and international followers.
  • If I don't hear back from the winner after 7 days another will be chosen via a random number generator.
  • My decision is final.
  • If for some reason either Chantecaille Palette is unavailable (this is highly unlikely), I will liaise with the winner and purchase their choice of Chantecaille products to the same value as the palette.
I think that is everything! I deliberated for a long while whether to use a Chantecaille palette as a prize as I wasn't blown away by the Sea Turtle Palette when I bought it myself. However, I think I'm in the minority and my aim with giveaways is to go for something that is a luxury item, not a necessity, the kind of thing you would love as an unexpected gift but would probably not go out and buy yourself. I know quite a few followers already have the Sea Turtles which is why I included the option of the Tiger in the Wild palette, plus it also means you can choose the one that you think is best suited to your colouring.

You can read my post on the Chantecaille Sea Turtles Palette here and the Chantecaille Tiger in the Wild Palette here.

Chantecaille Tiger in the Wild Palette
Finally, I would like to thank everyone for their kind comments and good luck wishes for my upcoming law exams. My revision is now well and truly underway and I am battling with leases, wills, trusts, sexual offences, you name it I seem to need to know it! That is why I have been absent from twitter and there have been a lack of posts recently. It was a real boost when I saw all the lovely comments, just what I needed when studying was beginning to get me down. Fingers crossed I pass, then it will be onto the next set of exams and training contract applications!

Monday, 4 April 2011

Just a quick explanation of why no posts for over a week. I have my law finals the first week of May, after they were postponed from October due to ill health. That has given me about 6 months to forget everything I knew and now I have a month to re-learn it all, stressed is not the word!

It is all my own fault but I have a packed revision schedule now as these are important exams so posts will be sporadic at best and I doubt I will be on Twitter much at all. To make up for this, I will be posting the giveaway I had planned in celebration of reaching 100 followers sometime this week. I've left it later than I initially intended because there seemed to be so many giveaways around I thought it might be overload, but hopefully mine will finish in time for Easter.

I have also decided to refrain from buying any beauty products this month, so I can go on a little shopping spree as a reward for finishing my exams, the end of my law degree. Am beginning to think though that sticking to a spending ban could be harder than passing my exams!

Once my exams are over I will be back to blogging as usual so I hope you'll stick with me until then x

A picture of the other distraction I have at the moment!
