Monday Manicure - MAC Formidable from the Venomous Villains Collection

Bad Fairy, Formidable, Mean & Green
It's Monday again so that means another manicure, I can't believe how quickly they come round again!

This week is something special, Formidable from the Maleficent section of the MAC Venomous Villains. All 3 polishes from the collection sold out online incredibly fast and when I saw them in person at 9am last Thursday at my local counter, I could see why.

Although all 3 shades are striking, Formidable is my favourite as it is cooler toned than the others and I love the contrast of the brown/aubergine and the teal/turquoise.

MAC Formidable - £8
I haven't bought any nail polishes from MAC for years so I was a little apprehensive as to the quality of the product, especially as I have seen other bloggers say it barely lasted on the nails 36 hours. I painted my nails on Saturday so have had them on at least 48 hours now and there is not one chip in sight. However, I do always apply 2 coats of OPI Nail Envy first, followed by 3 coats of Formidable and then a coat of Seche Vite. Even after a very hot bath yesterday my nails are still in great condition.

All three polishes are duo chrome, I am not very hot on the correct nail terminology so I hope that is the right way to describe it! The shade looks different depending on the angle of the nail and the lighting. I can while away the time just looking at the different colours that appear.

I would say that it is a micro glitter polish, the glitter being very fine. The base colour of the polish is a deep burgundy brown that is shot through with teal shimmer and glitter. From that description you may think that it wouldn't work, but somehow it just does.

You do need three coats with this type of polish as just one looks hideous, very streaky and you get no idea of the real colour. Two is better, but definitely use three for the very best finish. For this reason it is probably best to only use this shade when you have enough time to do a proper manicure, rather than a quick 'must do something to my nails before I go to work' etc.

It has been really hard to show just how spectacular this shade is in person, but I have taken photos of it applied to the nails both indoors and outdoors. This should give you a better idea of how the different lighting affects the colour.

Overall, I adore this colour and I think it fits in really well with the idea of the villainous Maleficent. It reminds me of the kind of mixtures of colours you would see in the old Disney films when the baddie was brewing some evil potion. I love classic Disney! I will post separately about the other two shades released with Venomous Villains as soon as I can bare to remove Formidable!

  1. I didn't get anything from this collection but wish I got the polishes!

  2. I passed on this collection entirely and now I have a bit of regret! I did happen to pick up Orly's Space Cadet (supposed to be a close dupe for one of the MAC). Formidable is fab on you!

  3. I would have passed on the polishes as well if I hadn't seen them in person in store. I am happy to report that Formidable is still in perfect condition on my nails,it is actually lasting better than Chanel and OPI on me. I can't understand why others seem to be having so many problems with it.

I heard about the Orly dupes but had never even heard of the brand before, not sure if it is available in the UK, so figured it would probably be easier to find the limited edition MAC!

I'll try and post about the other two shades soon so you can compare them to your Orly shade, but I can't quite bring myself to remove Formidable! X
